Association Executive of the Year
WSAE’s 2010 Association Executive of the Year is Meade Thayer, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools. Recognizing quality when they see it, two years ago the WSAE Board quickly drafted Meade Thayer to join the leadership team. Not only did Meade join the Board, he became active on committees. Currently he serves on the Membership Committee, Governance Structure Task Force, and the Finance Committee.
Of particular note is the instrumental role he played in the Governance Structure Task Force's review of the WSAE's Bylaws and the development of WSAE's new Policies & Procedures.
Meade can regularly be seen networking with association executives and associate members at WSAE programs - generously giving of his time and knowledge to anyone in need of assistance. He is a dedicated member of WSAE, and a true professional.
Speaking of association professional, Meade is in his 12th year as the Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools where he helps 110 member schools pursue the Association's accreditation.
Along with serving on the WSAE Board, Meade also serves on the National Association of Independent Schools Commission on Accreditation and the Greater Seattle Business Association's Scholarship Steering Committee.
Due to his prestigious involvement in the Commission of Accreditation, Meade will be stepping down from the WSAE's Board this year. Meade's expertise and sense of humor will surely be missed.
We think you will all agree that Meade embodies all the qualities of a truly great association executive: Integrity, professionalism, commitment, creativity, and passion. That is why it is a pleasure to honor Meade Thayer as WSAE's 2010 Association Executive of the Year.

Associate Member of the Year
This year's Associate Member of the Year is someone who has 25 years of experience in sales and marketing and who consistently proves to be a leader and inspiration to others through her ongoing education.
This year's Associate Member of the Year is Jill Radel - the Senior Sales Manager for the Best Western Lakeway Inn & Conference Center.
She is a long-time member of WSAE and is one of our most active Associate Members. Since late 2000, Jill has attended over 50 WSAE events including monthly programs and conventions.
She consistently serves on at least one WSAE Committee where she always demonstrates wisdom, creativity, and enthusiasm. In 2008 and 2009, she served on the Convention Committee. This year, she is serving on the Associate Relations Committee - playing an instrumental role in the Committee surpassing the Membership Directory and GEMs program revenue goals. Her work on recruiting new GEMs members even resulted in signing up her employer - the Lakeway Inn - as a Ruby Gem!
Jill consistently goes out of her way to promote membership in WSAE and to welcome new members once they join the Society. Her career includes having worked for the Edgewater Inn, Roche Harbor, Semiahmoo, Ocean Kayak, Washington Software Alliance, Industrial Credit Union, and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism.
Volunteering for most of her life, Jill believes giving back is one of her life's purposes. Not only does she volunteer for WSAE, but also the Bellingham Boys & Girls Club - currently serving on their Board of Directors.
Jill strongly believes and encourages others to study and follow the art of reinventing onself.

Volunteer in Association Service
This year’s recipient of WSAE’s Volunteer in Association Service Award is Bryce Taylor with NAIOP - Commercial Real Estate Development Association, Washington State Chapter.
Bryce, who is employed with GLY Construction, has taken active leadership roles in two of NAIOP's key committees - the Community Enhancement and the Real Estate Challenge Committees. In both, Bryce has shown tremendous commitment towards NAIOP.
As a member and Chairman for multiple years of NAIOP's Community Enhancement Committee, Bryce helped organize the work day event and has been a leader in the Association's efforts to raise money for their designated philanthropic efforts. His commitment to the Community Enhancement Committee has been above and beyond what anyone could ever expect from a volunteer, according to Eric Featherstone, NAIOP's Executive Director. Bryce adopted individual work plans for each work area indicating costs, number of volunteers, materials required, etc. This tied to an overall site map used at the event to help communicate to the 300+ volunteers what they were doing, where they were to go, and level of expertise required.
Bryce also introduced the idea of increasing the Association's contributions for in-kind material and service sponsors to help subsidize sponsorship costs, as well as provide and avenue for material and service providers to support the Community Enhancement Program.
A recent Community Enhancement project raised over $100,000 in sponsorship and in-kind donations and drew more than 360 people on a rainy Saturday. This is an increase from the $50,000 in sponsorship and 125-plus volunteers from just a few years ago.
One has to give extra credit to Bryce for co-chairing NAIOP's Real Estate Challenge Committee for several years. Just getting started locally, the program needed support. Bryce was able to work with the existing co-chair to help support the program and provide new ideas for sponsorship, as well as ideas and content to help grow the program and increase invisibility within NAIOP.
Bryce has also been active in NAIOP's Gavel program - meeting with local political leaders to express the view of the NAIOP membership with the goal of making NAIOP's voice heard in local and state government. Bryce's efforts resulted in his being one of the presenters for a half-day presentation and tour of local project for local and state legislators to see, first hand, what the development community was already doing in the way of sustainability standards without mandating legislation.
Most of you are wishing that you would have an opportunity to work with an extraordinary volunteer leader in your organization such as Bryce Taylor whose efforts have been deep, consistent, and ongoing.
We congratulate NAIOP for having such a leader in its midst and join them in thanking Bryce for partnering with association staff to serve members and the profession.

Community Service Award - WSAE Member Supplier
The DoubleTree Hotel Seattle Airport has a brand promise to "Provide exceptionally warm and caring service where guests feel welcome and appreciated".
DoubleTree's community involvement is apparent through their unique program called "Teaching Kids to CARE" coordinated through the Hotel's CARE Committee.
The CARE Committee is a core team in the hotel that focuses on creating and engaging culture and delivering the DoubleTree's brand promise to guests, the community, and team members. Along with the General Manger's leadership, guidance, enthusiasm, and commitment, the CARE Committee is a great volunteer group that achieves just as great results.
Each year, volunteers from the DoubleTree Hotel Seattle Airport present fun, interesting, and socially responsible lesson plans that engage and challenge elementary school students to make positive contributions to their community. They assist educators with encouraging students to become caring, informative, and strong leaders of tomorrow.
In 2008, the DoubleTree Hotel Seatte Airport partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and launched "Exploring Trees Inside & Out" - an environmental education exhibit that launched at the Pacific Science Center and traveled to other top children's museums and science centers in nine different U.S. cities.
Extending their partnership in 2008 with the Arbor Day Foundation, the DoubleTree Hotel Seattle Airport volunteers teamed up with 165 students from Bow Lake Elementary School in a worldwide edcuational initiative to urge students to celebrate the "Awesome Colors of Autumn". As part of the program, students engaged group discussions with teachers and classmates to explore the wonderful spectacle of fall folliage and learn why nature puts on such an impressive display of color in some parts of the world and not in others.
The culmination of the "Teaching Kids to CARE" fall season initiative was a celebration of students' "Leaf-lets of Love" stories that were hand-delivered to residents at Bow Lake Residential Community Center. Along with each Leaf-let of Love, DoubleTree Hotel Seattle Airport donated their legendary chocolate chip cookies to the students and residents - making the message delivered that much sweeter.
Most recently, just this Spring, DoubleTree's "Teaching Kids to CARE" program focused on the importance of trees, conservation, and the environment. Bow Elementary teachers developed lesson plans for the months of March and April and then the hotel team visited the school to present "Top Ten Tree Tips". During the week of April 19 - 23, the DoubleTree once again went to the school to celebrate the "Great Community Treehugger Event". The students went outside, hugged a tree, and received a certificate recognizing them as official treehuggers!
It is a pleasure for WSAE to recognize DoubleTree Hotel Seattle Airport for its service to the association community and to our state.

Community Service Award - Association
Associations continue to take the lead, reaching locally, nationally, and globally in response to natural and man-made devastation, and the Washington REALTORS is just one such association.
Washington REALTORS truly walks the talk when it comes to caring and giving back to its communities. In response to the horrific devastation of 9/11, the National Association of REALTORS created the REALTOR relief fund and raised over eight million dollars - every penny of which went to the families of those lost that day to help pay their mortgages and keep their homes. Washington REALTORS contributed $70,000 to that fund.
In the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, a group of 20 Washington REALTORS traveled to Slidell, Louisiana and assisted Habitat for Humanity in helping rebuild homes. The association paid for all of the volunteers' expenses, and the members volunteered their precious time away from their own work and families.
Community service and giving is the culture of the Washington REALTORS. Local REALTOR Associations have organized "Suitcases for Kids" - a program designed to provide foster children with new suitcases, giving them a place to keep their belongings when moving from house to house, as often happens.
