Awards Program

WSAE Celebrates Its Stars

Over sixty people were on-hand at the Redmond Marriott Town Center in Redmond on May 14th as WSAE members joined in the celebration of our own stars at our annual Awards Luncheon.  Always a highlight of our program year, this event met expectations.  Awards were presented to the following people and organizations:

Association Executive of the Year

WSAE’s 2009 Association Executive of the Year is Jackie Barry, CAE, Executive Director of the Physical Therapy Association of Washington. Jackie is someone known and respected by all. An extraordinary leader, her commitment to WSAE is absolute and her energy and enthusiasm are inspiring. Jackie consistently demonstrates teamwork, integrity, and dedication that is exemplified by her rarely missing a WSAE program.

Jackie is an active member, not only serving on several WSAE committees (including chairing WSAE's Social Responsibility Task Force), but is a member of the Board of Directors, and this next year will be stepping in to the position of Treasurer.

And when you see that listserv message gathering the Olympia Execs each month for an evening of camaraderie and networking, you can count on Jackie leading the cheer!

When Jackie is able to sneak a moment away from her association and work for WSAE, it is our understanding that Jackie loves to root on the Seattle Mariners and Ken Griffey, Jr.

Jackie embodies all the qualities of a truly great association executive: Integrity, professionalism, humor, commitment, creativity, and passion. She is a pleasure to work with, and we are grateful to have her as a "good-will ambassador" for WSAE.

Associate Member of the Year

Brynn Kloster
, Convention Sales Manager for the Yakima Valley Visitor & Convention Bureau, is a dedicated and contributing member of WSAE. This past year, Brynn was tapped for serving as Chairman of the revived Associate Relations Committee. And, although the directive for the Associate Relations Committee was somewhat sketchy at the start, Brynn forged ahead. Not only did Brynn recruit a strong committee of volunteers, she helped develop a survey to take the pulse of WSAE Associate Members and launched the new "Hot Topics & Tips" column in the Washington Executive geared to strengthen the executive/supplier relationship.

Further exemplifying her commitment to her new assignment, Brynn attended this past October's Board Retreat. During the two-day retreat, Brynn was an active and contributing attendee - providing invaluable perspective to issues addressed.

Brynn's enthusiasm for WSAE is also very apparent by her regular attendance at monthly meetings - making the long trek from Yakima.

Outside of WSAE, Brynn supports her local community volunteering for Junior League of Yakima and participates on a Relay for Life team that supports the American Cancer Society.

It is indeed a pleasure for WSAE to recognize Brynn Kloster as its Associate Member Of The Year.

Volunteer in Association Service

This year’s recipient of WSAE’s Volunteer in Association Service Award is Randy Johnson with the Physical Therapy Association of Washington.

As exemplified this last year, Randy is profoundly committed to the legislative success of the physical therapy profession. Of most significant note was his commitment to the Physical Therapy Association of Washington's annual legislative day held this past January. Of the 650 attendees, close to 250 were Apple Physical Therapy employees - as Randy closed 23 of Apple's clinics so employees were able to participate. But Randy didn't end with just closing the Apple clinics for the day, he then had Apple arrange for a carpool parking at Farmer's Market, bought red fleece jackets for all employees to make a strong visual statement, and scheduled special briefings for Apple employees with the association's lobbyist.

Randy further supported the legislative day effort by having Apple place two full page ads in the association's newsletter urging people to attend the legislative event, as well as had Apple physical therapists ask their patients to contact their legislators to talk about legislation that would have an adverse affect on the physical therapy profession. As a result, the association's visibility snowballed into unprecedented media attention and legislative support.

We congratulate the Physcial Therapy Association of Washington for having such a leader in its midst, and join them in thanking Randy for partnering with association staff to serve members and the profession.

Community Service Award - Supplier

Clark Nuber, PS is recognized for its commitment to caring for and supporting the community. Known for its matched gifts for employees' financial contributions to charity, Clark Nuber's new program now takes its support a step further. Through "Caring, Serving, and Giving" (CSG), a Clark Nuber employee may submit an application at any time of the year for a grant of up to $500. Those proposals that exemplify the company's values and offer a community benefit are funded. As a result, Clark Nuber has found that employees stay motivated to volunteer in the community and are involved in more volunteer projects. Since the fourth quarter of 2008, out of five projects that have been submitted for Clark Nuber's consideration - three have been approved for funding and a fourth is pending. CSG is still in its beginning stages, but Clark Nuber is pleased that CSG is already developing into a full corporate citizenship program.

Clark Nuber has been an active member of the community for more than 55 years. In addition to CSG, Clark Nuber's employees are devoted to other volunteer activities... The Big Climb for Leukemia, Race/Walk for the Cure for Breast Cancer, 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, Treehouse Pajama Drive for foster children, holiday families, and the United Way to name a few.

It is a pleasure for WSAE to recognize Clark Nuber for its service to the association community and our state.

Community Service Award - Association

WSAE recognizes the Financial Planning Association of Puget Sound that, during a time of economic struggle and crisis, gave of its time to teach the value of financial planning. Using the financial program develped by Junior Achievement, members of the association volunteered their time to teach Pacific Northwest students courses on work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. As a result, young people were inspired and given the courage to pursue their dreams.

Also during a time when many are struggling with the mortgage crisis, job losses, and dwindling retirement savings, members of the association also offered their services via hotlines, financial planning makeover articles in the Seattle Times, and other community education/outreach activities.

WSAE thanks the FPA of Puget Sound for its commitment to creating and building awareness of the financial planning process that enables individuals to make prudent financial decisions and to achieve their life goals and dreams.
